Axial neck pain:

It is also known as cervical strain. Important symptoms of the axial neck pain include discomfort in the pamedial neck muscles accompanied by radiation of that pain down to the shoulder region. It is caused by muscle and ligament interaction. Some conditions producing axial neck pain are bad posture, absence of ergonomic conditions, stress, chronic muscle fatigue, and similar type things.

It is also caused by the degeneration of the cervical disc or facet joint. Usually surgery is not necessary for treating axial neck pain. Most of the patients get relief and total recovery within some days. Surgery is needed in very few cases like two-level degenerative disc disease.

Whiplash-associated disorder:

Whiplash-associated disorder is one of the examples of acute pain. It occurs due to acceleration or deceleration, therefore the transfering of kinetic energy. There are various sources of this type of pain like myofacial ligamentous discogenic or facet joints. They are mainly caused by accidents.

Though there is very large number of WAD cases, more than half of the cases get resolved within a month. There is not much information about the occurrence of chronic symptoms following acute WAD. Currently WAD is identified by the stiffness of the neck in a particular direction and headache.

Cervical radiculopathy:

It is produced by high pressure on the cervical nerve root. Disc material or osteophytes create this pressure. Cervical radculopathy is characterized by radicular pain. As radicular pain requires specific treatment, it should be determined accurately. They occur approximately in 0.008 % of population and most of the cases occur in people 50-54 of the age.

Cervical myelopathy:

Cervical myelopathy is one of the uncommon types of the neck pain. It is also caused by the availability of less space for the spinal cord in the cervical canal. Minor causes of cervical myelopathy are small congential cord diameter, projecting disc material, osteophytes, dynamic changes in the diameter of the canal, etc. Symptoms of the cervical myelopathy are rarefied.

If clumsiness, weakness or stiffness occurs in the lower or upper extremities of the neck, it can be taken as a symptom of this problem. Symptoms also include the dysfunction of the leg, problems of balance, hesitancy, complaint of urination, etc.
