Stress Can Cause Neck Pain

The head and neck region is susceptible to many different stresses. Bad posture can cause misalignment of the neck, head and spine. Age and wear and tear can cause arthritis. Even activities like gum chewing and reading in bed can cause pain. One of the main flexible regions of the spine is the neck region which consists of vertebrae, seven shock-absorbing discs, muscles and vertebral ligaments to grip them in place.

The uppermost cervical disc connects the top of the spinal column to the base of the skull. One of the most common causes of neck pain and sometimes headaches is poor posture. It is easy to get into bad posture habits without even realizing it. It can happen while reading in bed can ultimately lead to pain, headaches and more serious problems. The sleeping position is another likely source of neck problems.

Does the pillow cause to sleep with the neck at an angle, either too high or too low? If so, one may want to spend in a new pillow. Feather pillows are usually preferable to foam. They conform easily to the shape of the neck. In addition, a bed that does not offer enough back support can also be a source of neck discomfort.

Tips to avoid neck strain and pain:

1. Make an effort doing stretching exercises before bed and first thing in the morning. 2. Do not sleep on the stomach. This position puts great pressure on the neck. 3. Do not over pillow the neck. 4. Keep the neck and spine in a neutral position. The neutral situation rule also holds true for people who spend time working at computer terminals. Again, do not bend the neck forward. Adjust the desk, monitor and chair to a comfortable height, so that the monitor is at eye level and the knees are slightly lower than the hips. Some people discover that a footstool helps in attaining this correct position. Sit close enough to the monitor so that one does not have to bend forward in order to see well. Use the chair's armrests, as the arms need support. Wear the eyeglasses if necessary. Consult the physical therapist to find the set-up that is right for you. Important note: Every one should also follow the neutral position rule when driving a car. Adjust the seat to bring one close enough to the pedals so that you the person does not have to extend the neck forward.
